The American International School Freetown is a private, co-educational day school that provides educational services for students from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 8. About Freetown and Sierra Leone
Sierra Leone borders Liberia and Guinea. The capital of the country is Freetown which has a population of about two million. English is the official language of Sierra Leone, but there are 16 other languages regularly spoken with the most common of these being Krio. Islam and Christianity are the major religions. The climate is tropical with temperatures ranging in the 70′s to 80′s. Sierra Leone has a rainy season that lasts from May to October. Security and health issues can be of some concern to new teachers. The school has 24-hour security, and most houses do as well. Medical facilities are basic; serious illnesses require medivac. Malaria is still prevalent in the country and new teachers need to use prophylaxis.
Freetown has supermarkets where many expatriates shop; imported goods are available but expensive. The area has beautiful beaches that are safe for swimming. There is a small, but growing, expatriate population. Freetown has a number of restaurants and bars that cater to locals and Westerners.
