Colegio Internacional de San Salvador (International School of San Salvador)

The school website for The Colegio Internacional de San Salvador is surprising in that, at first glance, it looks quite complete and easy for interested teachers, parents and students to navigate through. However, once you start looking around for information, there is much less available than there should be on a good school website.

The Colegio Internacional de San Salvador (International School of San Salvador) is a private, for profit, co-educational day school for students from Kindergarten through Grade 12. CISS was founded in 1979. The school is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Ministry of Education of El Salvador. Approximately 330 students are enrolled at CISS.

Mission
The school mission is to offer students a holistic American curriculum that will help them become lifelong learners that value cultural diversity and who are critical thinkers and responsible global citizens.

Facilities

Curriculum
CISS has two programs of study: one meets the standards of the El Salvador Ministry of Education and the other meets the requirements of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Students must meet the requirements of both programs to be promoted. They are given annual standardized tests from third grade through twelfth grade: students must achieve a minimum score to be promoted. The curriculum primarily follows a prep-school American curriculum. An ESL program is offered to students who need to improve their skills with the English language. Spanish is used as the language of instruction for Social Studies and Spanish language classes.

Extracurricular Activities
The school offers a variety of activities including dance, swimming, sports, community service, student council and more. Senior athletic teams compete with other schools in the Association of American Schools in Central America.

Technology
Computer classes are taught as part of the regular curriculum.

The International American School of Cancun

The International American School of Cancun is a private, non-profit, non-sectarian, co-educational day school for students from Grade Seven through Grade 12. The school was founded in 1998 and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the Ministry of Eduction and the National Autonomous University of Mexico. There are approximately 270 students in the school with the majority being Mexican citizens. There is a small international population in the school from Canada, the U.K., the United States and other countries.

Mission
IAS offers a bilingual, multinational environment where students receive an outstanding education that instills a lifelong love of learning and a sense of global responsibility.

Facilities
Facilities include two buildings with 15 classrooms, a library, a school psychologist, an auditorium, a cafeteria, science labs, computer labs, a sports field and a basketball court.

Curriculum
The school has a bilingual, bicultural American-style curriculum that prepares students for further education in both the United States and Mexico. Graduates receive a U.S. diplomat and a Mexican preparatory certificate. A few Advanced Placement courses are offered for senior students. IAS has a Spanish as a Second Language for students who need assistance with Spanish. Most of the classes for students in Grade 10 through Grade 12 are taught in English.

Extracurricular Activities
IAS offers a range of after school activities including Model United Nations, community service, National Honor Society, soccer, basketball, volleyball, ping pong, pilate, student council and golf. Sports teams compete with local teams and members schools of the American Schools of Mexico organization.

Technology
IAS has computer labs and computer courses are part of the regular curriculum. Students may broing their own laptops to the school with the permission of the teacher.

Teachers come from the United States, Mexico, England and Canada. The school website makes it clear that living and working in Cancun may be a challenge for teachers who are not used to working overseas in a city that lacks some of the resources that teachers have in the United States, Canada or the U.K.

About Cancun
Cancun is a popular, internationally-known resort community in southern Mexico. It ts a popular tourist destination because of its beautiful beaches, Mayan ruins, outdoor activities and great nightlife.The school notes on the website that despite all this, many of the Western amenities that Westerners might want are lacking, and it can be difficult for some teachers not accustomed to working in developing countries to adjust to life in Cancun.

The International School of Kigali

The International School of Kigali is a private, co-educational, non-profit day school for students from Preschool through Grade 12. ISK was founded only recently in 2009. The school has approximately 140 students that represent over 28 nationalities with the largest group being Americans; Rwandans represent about 12% of the students population. ISK has a 180 day school year that starts in August and runs through June. ISK is in the process of getting accreditation from the Council of International Schools and the Middle States Association.

Vision
The school vision is to provide a safe environment that allows students to become responsible global citizens, develop critical thinking skills and achieve academic success.

Facilities
The school has three separate, very attractive buildings in a residential area of Kigali. Facilities include 15 classrooms, a library, a science lab, an art room, a cafeteria and a basketball court.

Curriculum
ISK uses an American-style, college preparatory curriculum that is modified for use in an international setting. The curriculum standards are available online. The school is organized into four sections: Pre-school/Kindergarten, Primary School, Middle School and Secondary School. Core courses are the usual Social Studies, Science, Math, Language Arts. Specialist subjects include P.E., Art, Drama, Photography, French, Debate and Global Issues. A point of interest for those international school teachers who have worked in schools where it is common for students to miss a significant part of the school year for one reason or the other: ISK will not advance a student who misses more than 20 days in the school year.

Extracurricular Activities
ISK has a range of after school activities that include sports, arts and language activities.

Technology
The school integrates technology throughout the curriculum.

Professional Development
The school supports the professional development activities of the staff.

About Kigali and Rwanda
Kigali is the capital of Rwanda and has a population of around one million. The city is the economic, cultural and political center of the country. Kigali is located at an elevation of approximately 1,500 meters and is built on four mountain ridges, as well as the valleys between them. The city has a variety of restaurants and bars ranging from the very inexpensive to a few expensive restaurants that feature both local and international cuisines. Rwanda is located in the central part of Africa. It has a population of around 11 million. It is probably best known to Westerners for the genocide of 1994. Trekking to view the highland gorillas is one of the main tourist attractions.

Colegio Karl C. Parrish is a private, non-profit, co-educational day school for international and national students from Preschool to Grade 12. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Colombian Ministry of Education. The school was founded in 1938. KCP has over 700 students.

Mission
The school mission is to provided a bi-national, multicultural, bilingual curriculum that will enable students to become responsible and ethical global citizens who are prepared for the challenges of the future.

Facilities
The KCP campus is 22 acres and includes a Reggio-style Preschool area, 50 plus air-conditioned classrooms, playgrounds, sports fields, a library with over 20,000 volumes, a 465-seat auditorium, a swimming pool, a gym, the Model United Nations, National Honor Society, 4 science labs, 2 cafeterias and 4 computer labs.

Curriculum
KCP uses a bilingual, bi-national, multicultural curriculum that draws on the best of the United States and Columbia. Graduates receive an American High School Diploma and the Colombian Bachillerato Diploma. The school offers Advanced Placement courses and gives the PSAT and the SAT.

Extracurricular Activities
The school has a full activities program for students in all grades including art, drama, music, sports, and community service.

Technology
In addition to the four computer labs, each classroom has a computer, an LCD projector and a mimio board.

Professional Development
The school has a professional development fund that teachers can access. PD activities take place at the school throughout the year.

Employment
The school has 23 expat teachers, mostly from the United States. KCP wants dedicated, qualified and experienced teachers who will enjoy working in an open and collegial environment. Teachers at KCP need to have a BA, teaching certification and at least two years teaching experience. The school has a recruitment video online. Faculty have until January to declare their intentions for the next school year, so the school lists new openings after that.The school attends the major recruitment fairs like ISS and Northern Iowa. Interested teachers can send a letter of interest and a resume to the Director at mail@kcparrish.edu.co. The school will notify teachers who fit the school’s needs and arrange for interviews either at the school, a recruiting fair or via Skype.

While salaries are not given, the website says that many teachers can save over $10,000 per year. Salaries are subject to Colombian taxes. Benefits include annual airfare, health insurance, visas, furnished housing, excess baggage allowance, a cost-of-living allowance during the second year of the contract, free club membership, PD funds and tuition for dependents.

About Barranquilla
Barranquilla is only three hours from Miami. It has a population of around 2 million and is located on the Caribbean coast of Colombia. Western goods are readily available at the many shopping centers that are found around the city. Among the activities that teachers enjoy are dancing, hiking, swimming, tennis, golf, going to movies and the theater. Barranquilla has an active nightlife with many bars and nightclubs. And, it has Carnaval de Barranquilla four days before Ash Wednesday.

Graded – The American School of São Paulo (Escola Graduada de Sao Paulo)

Graded – The American School of São Paulo is a private, co-educational, non-sectarian day school for students from 3 through 18. The school was founded in 1920. While the school’s actual name appears to be The American School of Sao Paulo in English and Escola Graduada de Sao Paulo in Portuguese, it is commonly called Graded (and I have no idea why). Graded is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Brazilian Ministry of Education. This is an IB World School with authorization to use the IB Diploma programme.

Graded has over 1,200 students that represent 35 nationalities: 42% are Brazilian, 31% are North American, 10% are Latin American, 10% are Asian, and 6% are European. The school has 123 teachers.

Mission
The school mission is to give students an excellent American-style education that enables them to reach their potentials and become responsible global citizens.

Facilities
Graded has a 16-acre campus in the suburb of Morumbi. Facilities include 90 classrooms, playgrounds, 2 gyms, the Lemann-Tully Arts Center, 2 library/media centers, a running track, a soccer pitch, an auditorium, and infirmary, 9 computer labs, science labs and 2 theaters.

Curriculum
Graded uses and American curriculum for students from First Grade through Twelfth Grade. Preprimary use the Montessori curriculum. The school has three divisions: Lower School, Middle School and High School. The Lower School includes the Montessori Preprimary as well as the Elementary School. The Middle School and High School programs are college preparatory; graduates can receive an American High School diploma, the IB Diploma and a Brazilian High School diploma. Graded offers Advanced Placement courses for High School students. ESL support is available to all students that require it.

Extracurricular Activities
Graded offers a wide range of activities including the Model United Nations, choir, cancer shelter, book club, jazz band, photo club, Habitat for Humanity, day care, basketball, soccer, cheerleading and more.

Technology
Graded has 9 computer labs as well as 7 mobile labs. Most classrooms have projectors and interactive whiteboards. Most of the campus has wireless internet access. Technology is integrated throughout the curriculum.

Professional Development
The school provides teachers with funding for professional development activities.

Employment
Job openings are listed online. Teachers who are interested in working at Graded should send a resume to hr@graded.br with the desired position as the subject. Salaries are paid in Reais and are subject to Brazilian taxes. A salary schedule is not given on the school website. Benefits include an 8% severance allowance given annually, a 4% matching contribution to a pension fund, furnished housing, medical and dental insurance, air transportation to and from Sao Paulo, annual home leave airfare after two years, moving allowance of $500 coming to Brazil and $1,000 going home, settling-in allowance, professional development funding of $1,000 annually, grocery allowance of $60 monthly, free school lunch during work days, loan for automobile purchase, tuition for dependents, sick leave, bereavement leave, and personal days.

About São Paulo
São Paulo is the largest city in Brazil and the second largest city in Latin America. It has a population of city population of over 11 million and a metropolitan population of close to 20 million. It is the 10th richest city in the world and the main financial center of Brazil. São Paulo is home to many multinational corporations. The cost of expat living is expensive so the school should be paying a decent salary. As would be expected in a city of this size, there’s plenty to do and see from museums and theaters to pubs and clubs.

São Paulo is located in the south of the country and is about 70 kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean. It is an easy drive to the beach town of Guaruja. São Paulo has a mixed climate that is generally mild but with a lot of rain. The city is ethnically diverse, and the main language is Portuguese.
