Lucaya International School is an independent, co-educational, non-profit, day school for students from
PreK through Year 13. LIS was founded in 1998. It is accredited by the Council of International Schools and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. LIS is an IB World School with authorization to use the PYP and the IB Diploma Programme. Class sizes are small due to the student/teacher ratio of 7:1. LIS has over 200 students that represent 20 nationalities.
Philosophy
The school philosophy is to help students develop their potentials and become critical and independent thinkers, as well as responsible global citizens.
LIS has a 12-acre campus in a rural area with facilities that include an EC Center, an IB Building, a library, a computer lab, science labs, music rooms, art rooms, a covered lunch area, a soccer field, playgrounds, basketball courts and an all purpose field.
Curriculum
The school has a college preparatory curriculum that is based on North American, British and IB models. Young students follow the PYP. Middle School students prepare for the IGCSE of Year 10 and Year 11. Students in Year 12 and Year 13 take the IB Diploma Programme.
Extracurricular Activities
LIS has a wide range of activities that are offered on a quarterly basis. These include arts and crafts, basketball, tennis, computer club, community service, yearbook, board games, yoga, sailing, skateboarding, yearbook and more.
Technology
The school has a computer lab. They believe in integrating technology throughout the curriculum. Teachers are expected to be computer literate.
Professional Development
No information is available, but all IB World Schools have an extensive PD program, so I’m sure that LIS does as well.
Employment
LIS wants teachers that are dynamic, qualified and committed to improving the school program. Job openings are listed online and on the websites of the Council of International Schools and the IBO. The school starts recruitment in December and usually has openings filled by March. Qualifications include a teaching certificate, a university degree, computer competency, an understanding of how to work in a small non-profit school, flexibility and a desire to be an active participant in curriculum development and after school activities. An advanced degree and IB experience are preferred. Salaries are said to be competitive and are paid in Bahamian dollars. Benefits include tuition for dependent children, medical insurance, a shipping allowance, round-trip airfare, and summer flights home after the first two years of employment.
