St. Croix Country Day School

St. Croix Country Day School is an independent, non-profit, co-educational day school that provides educational services for students from Nursery through Grade 12. It was founded in 1964 and is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Country Day has almost 500 students.

Mission
The school mission is to give students a challenging education that will encourage them to become lifelong learners and responsible and productive individuals.

Facilities
The school has a 34-acre campus with facilities that include an Olympic size swimming pool, 4 computer labs, science labs, art and music rooms, athletic fields, a library with over 25,000 titles and air-conditioned classrooms.

Curriculum
The school uses a college preparatory curriculum similar to that found in private schools in the United States. Advanced Placement courses are offered to students in the Upper School.

Extracurricular Activities
Country Day has a range of activities for students including sports like swimming and soccer, drama, music, yearbook, school newspaper and more.

Technology
The school has a state-of-the-art computer system. All classrooms have internet access, as well as Smart Boards or large screen monitors. In addition to the four traditional computer labs, the school has a mobile laptop lab and wireless access in the upper grade classrooms. Teacher undergo faculty training so that they can make the best use of the technology in the classroom. Country Day uses both Macs and PCs. Computer classes are taught as part of the regular curriculum.

The Good Hope School

The Good Hope School is an independent, nonsectarian, non-profit, co-educational day school that provides educational services for students from Pre-K through Grade 12. It is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and was founded in 1967.

Mission
The school’s mission is to provide students with rigorous college preparatory curriculum that will help them to become critical, creative thinkers and responsible global citizens.

Facilities
The school has two campuses on the island of St. Croix. The main 32-acre campus has 10 buildings that include multi-purpose rooms, a 5,000 square foot library, 3 computer labs, a 300-seat theater, a swimming pool, athletic facilities, playgrounds, art and music rooms and regular classrooms. The second campus is dedicated to the Early Childhood program and has classrooms and an outdoor playground.

Curriculum
GHS uses a college preparatory integrated curriculum that follows the traditional U.S. model for a college prep school. The school is organized into a Lower School, Middle School and Upper School. Younger students have the usual “core classes” with a homeroom teacher, and specialist classes like computer and art with specialists. The size of the school and its organization lead students from all grade levels to interact with each other so that the school has a strong feeling of community.

Extracurricular Activities
The school offers a range of clubs and activities including music, art, drama, Future Business Leaders of America, student government, and sports such as soccer, volleyball, softball, tennis and swimming.

Technology
The school offers computer classes as part of the regular curriculum. 3 computer labs are used for available around campus.

Baldwin offers a challenging curriculum and nurturing environment that help students develop into engaged, thoughtful and culturally aware citizens and learners.

Facilities
Baldwin School has a 23-acre campus in Guaynabo. Among the facilities are 2 computer labs; a science center; a 25-meter pool; 2 media centers; tennis,volleyball and basketball courts; soccer, softball and baseball fields; playgrounds, and an air-conditioned cafeteria.

Curriculum
The school has a challenging balanced curriculum within the context of a college preparatory institution. In the Elementary School, focus is put on reading, writing, math and character education. High School students can take honor courses and Advanced Placement courses.

Extracurricular Activities
Baldwin offers students a wide variety of activities including talent show, Spanish Week, choir, band, forensics, math club, National Junior Honor Society, National Honor Society, swimming, tennis, baseball, yearbook, science club, computer club and much more. The school has competitive sports teams for students from Grade 4 and up.

Technology
Baldwin has a formal robotics class in addition to offering it as an afterschool activity. Computer classes are taught as part of the regular curriculum.

About Guaynabo
Guaynabo is located in northern Puerto Rico and is part of the San Juan metropolitan area. This municipality has many upper middle class and wealthy neighborhoods, thus attracting a number of private schools. Guaynabo is home to the first modern shopping mall in the Caribbean; it was built in 1963.

American International School of Kingston

The American International School of Kingston is a co-educational, private, non-profit day school that provides educational services for students from Pre-School through Grade 12. It was founded in 1994 and is an IB World School with authorization to use the IB Diploma Programme. AISK is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The school has an excellent website with full information about their program with the exception of information on salaries, benefits and the employment process.

AISK has approximately 270 students that represent over 26 nationalities. The student/teacher ratio is 9:1.

Mission
AISK’s mission is to help students become lifelong learners and responsible global citizens.

Facilities
AISK moved into new purpose built 9-acre campus in 2009. Among the facilities are a dance studio, a cafeteria, a football pitch, tennis courts, an administration building, a computer lab and science labs.

Curriculum
AISK is organized similarly to American K-12 schools with an Elementary School, a Middle School and a High School. The school uses a fusion American/national curriculum. The Middle School and High School are designed to prepare students for university entrance. Students that graduate from AISK receive an American high school diploma. Grade 11 and Grade 12 students can study for the IB Diploma.

Extracurricular Activities
The school offers a wide range of activities including Model United Nations, dance, music, choir, Chemistry of Cooking, ESL Club, Journalism, SAT Math, SAT English, American Football, Basketball, Cricket, Soccer and more.

Technology
AISK has a strong technology program. It has a 1:1 laptop program for the Middle School and the High School and a Mac lab for Elementary students. Teachers have MacBooks, and all classrooms have overhead projectors. The entire campus has Wi-Fi. Technology is integrated throughout the curriculum.

Professional Development
The school provides teachers with support for professional development activities.

Employment
Teacher candidates need to have a Bachelor’s Degree, certification, two years experience, strong IT skills especially with Macs and IB experience is preferable. Job openings are listed online. The school only hires American, British and Jamaican passport holders. Teachers who are interested in working at the school should send a letter of interest addressed to the Head of School, a CV, proof of a degree and certification, and contact details for referees to humanresources@aisk.com.

New teachers will be expected to turn in lesson plans weekly and to have an outline of the year’s course with all topics covered ready to give to students on the first day of class. Teachers are expected to sponsor 15 hours of extracurricular activities per year. While detailed information on salaries and benefits is not given, the school does note that they are competitive.

About Kingston and Jamaica
Living in Jamaica can be great for teachers that love the outdoors. For golfers, there are two 18 hole course close to the school. Other outdoor activities include diving, hiking, cliff jumping, and boating. Kingston has a number of supermarkets with Western goods, but at a higher price than found back home. There are plenty of restaurants and bars for hanging out. And, of course, Jamaica is the home of reggae. Take a visit to the Bob Marley Museum, and then check out a reggae concert. If you have a desire to live and work in a fabled tropical island, you might want to check out AISK.

The International School of Port of Spain

The International School of Port of Spain is a private, co-educational school. The school was founded in 1994 and is located in Trinidad and Tobago. My old friends and colleagues, Tom and Alene Tunny were the founding teachers of the school. The Southern Association of Schools and Colleges accredit it. The school offers a PreK-12 college preparatory program. ISPS is an IB World School with authorization to use PYP.

There are 14 classes in the Elementary school with approximately 16 students in each class. There are approximately 500 students in the school. The majority of the students are Trinidadian; the second largest group is from the United States. The school has students from 40 different nationalities. There are 112 students in the high school; approximately 25% are from the United States.

Mission and Philosophy
ISPS mission is to provide an excellent education for both local and international students that will enable them to attend university in the future.

Facilities
ISPS has a very nice library which is prominently displayed on the school website. The school also has air-conditioned classrooms, sports facilities, a computer lab, and more.

Curriculum
The ISPS offers an international education based upon a US curriculum model. The International School of Port of Spain utilizes the rich and diverse environment of Trinidad and Tobago and draws on the special qualities of the ISPS community to prepare young people for the challenges they will face as citizens of the twenty-first century. ISPS uses the PYP. If you know the IB philosophy, you’ll find it on the web pages of the school when they discuss what the elementary curriculum is like. The middle School uses block scheduling. Core classes are Math, Social Studies/Language Arts. Science, Spanish, Health and Physical Education. Technology is integrated throughout the curriculum. The high school curriculum is college preparatory and Advanced Placement courses are available. The school uses the following standardized tests: PSAT, SAT Reasoning Test, SAT Subject Tests, ACT and AP Exams.

Extra-curricular Activities
Community service is an important part of the school as are educational and experiential trips. High school students take part in many activities including sports, student government, drama, the Model United Nations. The Middle School has an Outdoor Education program.

Technology
The computer lab has Internet facilities. There are 250 computers in the school, including 4 mobile wireless labs. Most of them are Windows based, but they have a few iMacs. Every classroom has 2 computers. Computer skills are introduced and reinforced through a project-based approach.

Professional Development
The school has a PD committee and provides professional development opportunities.

Employment
The school website has an interesting page with the profile of a successful teacher at ISPS. The points that they list are the common ones that you will find in most teacher contracts including supervising after school activities. The website has an excellent guide for new teachers. The requirements for a teacher at ISPS are: a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in the area of vacancy, at least two years of recent, full time classroom teaching experience in the area of vacancy, international experience or experience in a North American system, current/valid registration with the Ministry of Education or possess a valid teaching certificate from abroad, computer literate and good organizational skills.

The school no longer has the salary schedule online, but they do note that teachers will be able to live comfortably but probably will not be able to save much money.

Benefits include: medical insurance, retirement contribution professional development opportunities through the PD Committee, life insurance, one year’s non-paid sabbatical leave, after 3 years of full-time service, three month Maternity Leave, with full pay, one week paternity leave, with full pay, 5 days bereavement leave, with full pay, 10 days sick/personal days with pay, annual round trip airfare allowance (US$1500.00), car provided for personal and professional use, furnished housing provided (2-3 bedroom flats); singles do not share, shipping/settling allowance (US$1500.00) beginning and end of employment and free tuition for accompanying children.

About Trinidad and Tobago
Well, obviously being in the Caribbean is going to make this school popular with many prospective teachers. So what is there to do in Trinidad and Tobago?

You will have the opportunity to take part in many different types of physical activities from hiking through the rainforests to scuba diving to bird watching. In fact, Trinidad has more than 450 species of birds, 108 types of mammals, 55 forms of reptiles and 620 types of butterflies. This is a nature lover’s paradise.

Trinidad and Tobago are the home to a diverse ethnic population as witnessed by the various celebrations and ceremonies that can be found on the island such as Divali, Eid-ul-Fitr, Christmas, Carnival and much more.

You can find restaurants and bars that celebrate diversity around the island along with that intoxicating steelpan music. Sounds like a pretty good place to set down some roots for a while.
