About Haiti
Haiti is located on the western third of the island of Hispaniola. The Dominican Republic occupies the rest of the island. Haiti has been an independent republic since the revolution of 1986. There is a lot going on in the country in terms of economic and political changes so you need to be prepared for some turmoil if you decided to move to Haiti.
The country is predominately rural with most people making a living as farmers or by fishing. As in many developing countries, there are extremes of poverty and wealth. The school website notes that teachers need to be flexible and emotionally stable, as well as being patient and having a sense of humor and adventure. In other words, be prepared for some difficulties in living.
It is possible to get Western goods in Haiti but they cost triple the price of what you would find in the United States. You can get internet access and cable television.
Haiti has a climate similar to that of Miami, and there are many opportunities for taking part in water sports. There are bars and restaurants that are relatively inexpensive, but most teachers make up their own entertainment. The school website notes that most teachers go through a period of adjustment, but they do survive.
