Marymount International School Rome

Marymount International School Rome is a private, Catholic, co-educational day school for students from Early Childhood through Grade 12. The school was founded in 1946 and is accredited by the New England Association of Colleges and Schools and the Council of International Schools. Marymount is an IB World School with authorization to use the IB Diploma Programme.

Mission
The school mission is to help students reach their potential, know and love God, further the mission of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary, and promote justice and human dignity for all people.

Facilities
The school has a 40-acre campus on top of a hill in a parkland setting in northern Rome. Facilities include computer labs, libraries, an Early Childhood Center, a soccer field, basketball courts, a running track, playgrounds, five academic buildings, a chapel, a cafeteria, tennis courts, volleyball courts, a coffee bar, an art studio, bright classrooms, music rooms, art studios, fully equipped science labs, an auditorium, a faculty lounge and a dining room.

Curriculum
The school uses an integrated American curriculum. Graduates receive an American high school diploma. Students in Grades 11 and 12 may take the IB Diploma Programme. The school also offers Advanced Placement classes. Marymount has an ESL program for students who do not speak English as their first language.

Extracurricular Activities
Marymount offers a wide range of activities including Model United Nations, National Honor Society, music, drama, dance, cheerleading, soccer, swimming, basketball, homework club, foreign languages and more. The school is a member of the DoDDS Mediterranean League; varsity teams compete with other American and international schools in the region.

Rome International School

Rome International School is an independent, co-educational day school that provides educational services for students from age 2 to 18. RIS was founded in 1988 and has grown steadily since then. Rome International School is an IB World School with authorization to use the PYP and the IB Diploma Programme. Over 500 students study at RIS. The school sounds like a great place to work, but, unfortunately, the school only hires citizens of EU countries.

Mission
The school mission is to give students the academic, social and personal skills and knowledge they need in order to reach their potentials while becoming lifelong learners.

Facilities
The school campus is located in a residential area of Rome. facilities include 2 science labs, 2 computer labs, 2 libraries, 2 music rooms, 2 art rooms, a gym, an art room, a special needs room and an English as an Additional Language room.

Curriculum
RIS uses the PYP for younger students from Kindergarten through Grade 6 and the IB Diploma Programme for students in Grade 11 and Grade 12. Middle School Students use an international program based on the British National Curriculum. Students use the GCSE for the first two years of High School. The school has programs for students with special needs as well as those students needing help with English.

Extracurricular Activities
The school offers a variety of extracurricular activities including academics, drama, sports, Chemistry Club, Dance Club, Creative Writing Club, Environmental Club, Photography Club and Philosophy Club. RIS also takes students from Grade 3 and up on residential trips.

The American Overseas School of Rome

The American Overseas School of Rome was founded in 1946. It is a Pre-K through Grade 12 private day school that is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The school follows the North American school year.

AOSR has about 630 students that represent 60 countries: 30% of the students are from the United States, 30% are Italians and the rest come from all over the world. Class sizes vary according to grade level: students in lower elementary have from 16-18, students in upper elementary have from 18-22, students in middle school have an upper limit of 20 and high school classes can have anywhere from 4-24 students.

The majority of teachers are from the United States (about 70%) with the rest coming from around the world.

Mission
The mission of AOSR is to create a welcoming environment where students can develop their creativity and critical thinking skills and prepare for further studying in American and international universities.

Facilities
The school has undergone regular renovation in order to provide the best facilities possible for their students. The school sits on a 2 hectare site with five buildings that include 55 classrooms, a cafeteria, a weight room, 4 computer labs, science labs, a gym, two outdoor basketball courts, and a soccer field.

Curriculum
AOSR uses an American curriculum. While English is the primary language of instruction, the school also offers the Italian National Curriculum for Italians in elementary and middle school. High School students may take Advanced Placement courses and/or the IB Diploma. The school offers ESL for students in grades 1-12.

Extra-curricular Activities
AOSR offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities that include sports, music, art, and drama. The High School has competitive athletic teams.

The school prefers to hire United States citizens who have at least two years teaching experience; advanced degrees are preferred. About Rome
Rome is the capital of Italy and has a population of around 2.7 million residents. Of course, Rome has a history that goes back thousands of years and for the student of ancient civilization, living in this city will give you a chance to see all of the things that you have read about for years.

Rome has a Mediterranean climate and has very pleasant weather from April through June.

Rome has a strong economy that includes technology, research, and tourism. The city’s unemployment rate is one of the lowest in the EU. Rome is also the center of the Italian film industry and some of the movies made here include: Ben Hur, Cleopatra, the Fellini films and more. Rome is also an import center for art and music. Rome has a vibrant nightlife with clubs, restaurants, cafes and bars. You can find just about anything that you want in Rome.

International School of Trieste

The International School of Trieste was founded in 1964. It is a non-profit day school for students from the ages of 2 to 19. IST is accredited by the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges. IST has a new website that offers even less information than the old version did.

IST has over 300 students that represent 25 nationalities. Many of the students come from the local community, and many of the international students come from families associated with local scientific institutions. Class sizes run from an average of 20 in Early Childhood to 24 in Elementary School to 20 in the Middle School and 10 in the High School.

Mission
The mission of the school is to provide a world-class international education that helps students develop their potentials and become lifelong learners and responsible citizens.

Facilities
The school has a two-story building that also includes a sports facility. Other facilities include: a library, a science lab, state of the art computer lab, a cafeteria, and a gym, along with outdoors play areas.

Curriculum
IST offers students an international curriculum. The school is organized with four academic sections: Early Childhood, Elementary School, Middle School and High School. All sections with the exception of Early Childhood study Italian as a vital component of the program. The school curriculum has Core Subjects and Additional Subjects, similar to many international schools.

Extra-curricular Activities
IST has a range of extra-curricular activities including sports like tennis, baseball and soccer, music, drama, a variety of clubs, chess, yoga, Italian, and community development.

Technology
IST upgraded their technology infrastructure in November 2010. They have a fast and reliable internet connection. The campus has a wireless network. IST has computer classes for all age students although the computer is used more as a “problem-solving machine” in the upper grades.

The school updated their website recently, and it offers even less information about employment than the old website. The school seeks teachers who are are flexible and share the school’s educational philosophy. The hiring season for the school is between January and March, but they accept applications throughout the year. No information is available on salaries or benefits. About Trieste
Trieste is a beautiful city located in northeastern Italy on the Adriatic Sea. It has a population of just over 200,000 and was once part of Austria. This is one of those cities known as border towns because it sits along the Slovenian border. The mixed population is made up of Italians, Slovenians, Serbs, Croatians, Germans and Hungarians. Trieste is a port city and much of its economy depends on its strategic geographical location. Trieste has a pleasant climate with cold but dry winters, rainy springs and autumns, and hot dry summers.

Some of the highlights of the city are: the Miramare Castle built in the mid ninteenth century, the Castle of San Giusto, the Arch of Riccardo that dates back to the Roman period, the Basilica Forense, the Roman theatre and more. James Joyce did much of his writing here. The city actually has a long list of famous writers who took up residence there while writing.

The International School of Florence

The International School of Florence was founded in 1952. It is an independent, co-educational day school that provides educational services for around 400 students from preschool through grade 12. While ISF originally used an American based curriculum, it is now a fully international school and offers the IBO’s PYP and IB Diploma as well as offering an Italian equivalency program for students in grades 1 through 8. ISF is accredited by the Council of International Schools and the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges.

Mission
The ISF mission is to provide a challenging and innovative education that leads students to become responsible world citizens with a desire to become lifelong learners.

Facilities
The International School of Florence has one campus for the Junior School and a second campus for the Middle School and High School. Both schools are located in Renaissance villas. The Junior School is about 20 minutes outside the center of Florence and has an art studio, a music room, classrooms, a lunch room, a computer lab and a library. It also features an all-weather sports field, two playgrounds, an outdoor field and a special play area for the Preschool and Kindergarten. The Secondary School Campus villa is located closer to the center of Florence and includes a computer lab, a science wing, an art studio, classrooms, an all-weather field, a lunch room and a library. Students use a sports complex just off campus for PE classes.

Extra-curricular Activities
The school has an extensive list of extra-curricular activities for students from Kindergarten through Grade 12. Activities include: sports such as basketball and running; academic clubs like homework club and newspaper club; yearbook; dancing; Chinese and ballet. Activities for older students include: Model United Nations, soccer, student council, community service and yearbook.

Curriculum
The Junior School uses the International Baccalaureate PYP as the core curriculum framework, and teachers use a variety of teaching strategies with all students at this level. Students in the Middle School take a variety of traditional courses. This coursework helps prepare them for the high school years and the IB Diploma Program which is offered to students in Grade 11 and 12.

Technology
Students take ICT classes each week. Internet access is available in the school computer labs.

As an IB school, ISF is required to provide teachers with professional development activities.

About Florence
Florence has a population of around 400,000 and is the capital of Tuscany. The city has an impressive history and is considered to be by some the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and the cultural capital of Italy. This is a great city for the history teacher or buff. The historic centre of Florence is a World Heritage Site. Florence is an ideal city for teachers who want to stroll around and discover Florence’s treasures such as their museums like the Uffizi, the National Museu of Bargello, and the Accademia Gallery.

Food is, of course, another of Florence’s attractions. With an amazingly wide variety of choices from lampredotto (tripe) to gelato (ice cream), the food connoisseur can spend weekends either eating from the street carts or sampling the dining options in the Santa Croce district.

Florence has a Mediterranean clime with hot summers and cool winters. Because the city sites in a valley, it can get quite hot and humid during the summer months. The winter is marked by rain and occasional snow.
