George Washington Academy

If you are interested in working in Casablanca, George Washington Academy may be just the place for you. George Washington Academy is a private, non-profit, co-educational day school that provides educational services for students from Preschool to Grade 12. The school was founded in 1998. GWA is accredited by the Moroccan government and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The school has around 700 students; approximately 70% of the student population are Moroccan. GWA has a student teacher ratio of 13:1.

Mission
The school mission is to offer an American-style education that encourages excellence, integrity and Moroccan and American values.

Facilities
GWA has a purpose-built 5 hectare campus in the suburbs of Casablanca. Facilities include 60 classrooms, 2 science labs, an art room, a multi-purpose room, a library, computer labs, teacher housing, a 400-meter track, playgrounds, a soccer field, basketball courts and more rooms currently under construction.

Curriculum
The curriculum is American with a trilingual program. Elementary School students take coursework in English, French and Arabic. Advanced Placement courses are offered to High School Students. Graduates receive an American High School Diploma.

Extracurricular Activities
GWA has a range of activities including clubs, community service, sports, arts and crafts and student government.

Technology
The school has several computer labs and keeps up to date with the latest in technology. Computer classes are taught as part of the regular curriculum.

Professional Development
Faculty can take advantage of professional development opportunities through the Mediterranean Association of International Schools.

Employment
The school has a recruitment video online that shows the expat staff having a good time in Morocco, but nothing about what it’s like to teach at the school. However, you can read some comments by faculty members on the school website. GWA wants teachers that have the minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Education or a relevant field, a teaching certificate, classroom experience and are willing to make a two year commitment to the school. Job openings are listed online. An application form is online. Interested teachers can learn more by writing the school at dbult@gwa.ac.ma. GWA does most of its hiring during the winter months.

The school offers a competitive salary that is based on education and experience. Benefits include professional development funds, tuition discounts, language support and what else? They don’t say.

About Casablanca
Casablanca has a population of just over three million. It is the largest city in Morocco and the main port. However, Rabat is the capital of the country. Casablanca has a mild climate – temperatures range from a low of around 8 degrees Celsius in December to a high of around 26 in August.

It’s easy to get around the city and Casablanca a mix of the old and the new. When you are in the modern parts of the city, you could be in any city of the world. You can easily get European food here, as well as, of course, traditional Moroccan cuisine.

The American School of Marrakesh

The American School of Marrakesh is an independent, non-profit, co-educational day school that provides educational services for students from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12. ASM is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The school was founded in 1995.

ASM has over 450 students that are primarily Moroccan, along with students from Europe and America.

Mission
The school mission is to provide students with an excellent education in a multi-cultural environment where they can become skilled in English, Arabic and French, as well as responsible global citizens.

Facilities
ASM is located in the suburbs of Marrakesh. Facilities include a computer lab, a library, air-conditioned classrooms, sports facilities and more. Actually, the school doesn’t really discuss facilities on the website, which seems to have many sections under construction.

Curriculum
ASM uses a balanced college preparatory curriculum based on American standards and benchmarks. The majority of students speak English as a second or third language. The school is organized into two sections: Lower School and Upper School. Classroom resources are purchased in the United States. ASM gives some standardized tests including the International Standards Assessment, the PSAT, the SAT, TOEFL and the American Mathematics Examination.

Extracurricular Activities
ASM offers a variety of activities that include arts and crafts, Model United Nations, the school newspaper, the yearbook, volleyball, basketball, running, soccer, dance, drama and more. The school sports programs include competitions with other schools in Morocco.

Technology
Computer classes are part of the school curriculum for students from Kindergarten through Grade 12. ASM works to integrate technology throughout the curriculum.

Professional Development
No information is available. I’m always a bit concerned about schools that don’t say anything about their PD program.

Qualifications for teacher candidates are: native-like English speaking ability, BA or MA in education, certification, teaching experience and experience working in an international school. ASM does not list salaries and benefits other than to say that they are competitive. Job openings are listed online. About Marrakesh
Marrakesh is the second-largest city in Morocco and is located near the Atlas Mountains with the desert at its southern border and the Atlantic Ocean on the west. The city has a population of just over a million. Marrakesh has a semi-arid climate with temperatures that run from 12 degrees Celsius in the winter to 23 degrees in the summer. Marrakesh is one of those Moroccan cities that fascinate many Westerners: references to Marrakesh can be found in songs like “Marrakesh Express” by Crosby, Stills and Nash; in films like The Man Who Knew Too Much by Alfred Hitchcock; and in literature like the essay “Marrakech” by George Orwell.

American School of Tangier

Here’s a school that I would love to work at for a few years. The American School of Tangier is a private, co-educational, day school that provides educational services for students from age 3 through 18. It was founded in 1950 and has a long and colorful history.

The school has about 300 students most of which are Moroccan. Teachers are predominately American or Moroccan. Maximum class sizes run from 22 in the Lower School to 24 in the Upper School.

Mission
The school’s mission is to inspire students so that they become positive global citizens.

Facilities
AST has an impressive campus. Facilities include a library, a gym, an outdoor pool, art and music rooms, computer labs, science lbs, sports fields, playgrounds, a theatre and well equipped classrooms.

Curriculum
AST uses an American-style fusion curriculum with three divisions: the Lower School, the Middle School and the Upper School. The core courses are the usual: math, science, social studies, English, Arabic, French and PE. Specials are technology, drama, music, research, library and electives. The school offers some AP classes for older students. Graduates receive an American high school diploma.

Extracurricular Activities
The school offers a wide variety of activities including SCUBA classes, art and drama, music, interscholastic sports, Arabic, student council and more.

Technology
Each classroom has one networked computer with internet access. AST also has a computer lab. Computer classes are part of the regular curriculum.

Professional Development
No information is available.

Employment
AST is interested in qualified and experienced teachers. They note that they have a very stable teaching staff with few openings. Candidates should send a cover letter with a copy of a college degree, the date and location of certification, teaching experience and contact information for references. About Tangier
Tangier is located in Northern Morocco and has a population of around 700,000. It has a long, fabled past as the home to many expat writers, musicians and jet setters, such as Paul Bowles, Tennessee Williams, Jean Genet and Barbara Hutton. Among the well-visited sites in Tangier are the Kasbah, the tomb of Ibn Battouta and the American Legation which includes a museum.
