Pan American School of Bahia

The Pan American School of Bahia is a private, co-educational day school for students from pre-school through Grade 12 that was founded in 1960. The school has a 180 day school year and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and recognized by the Brazilian Ministry of Education. Pan American has over 600 students with approximately 75% coming from Brazil; the rest of the student body represent over 20 nationalities.

Mission
The school mission is to lead students to become lifelong learners who respect diversity, are globally responsible citizens and develop their skills to their full potential.

Facilities
Pan American School of Bahia is located in a residential district of Salvador. The school has a 20,000 square meter campus with an elementary complex and a middle/high school building. Facilities include 33 air-conditioned classrooms, an art center, 2 computer labs, 2 science labs, a library/media center, 2 soccer fields, a covered gym, a semi-olympic swimming pool, a canteen, an outdoor basketball court and several playgrounds.

Curriculum
The school has a college preparatory curriculum that is based on American standards and teaching methods and integrates this curriculum with the Brazilian curriculum. Pan American offers graduates a Brazilian or an American diploma. The school offers high school students a number of Advanced Placement courses. The school curriculum is online.

Extracurricular Activities

About Salvador
Salvador is located on the northeast coast of Brazil and has a population of approximately 2.7 million. It is the capital of the state of Bahia and is known for its relaxed environment, seafood-based cuisine and music. The city also has many historical monuments from the colonial period and was given World Heritage Site status by UNESCO in 1985. In addition to the local markets, Salvador has a number of American-style malls.

Salavador has a tropical rainforest climate with no real dry season. Temperatures are consistently in the mid-30s.

Tourism is an important sector of the city’s economy and is the second most popular tourist spot in the country after Rio de Janeiro. The city has 80km of beaches and popular activities include fishing, surfing, sailing and diving.

Colegio Karl C. Parrish

Colegio Karl C. Parrish is a private, non-profit, co-educational day school for international and national students from Preschool to Grade 12. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Colombian Ministry of Education. The school was founded in 1938. KCP has over 700 students.

Mission
The school mission is to provided a bi-national, multicultural, bilingual curriculum that will enable students to become responsible and ethical global citizens who are prepared for the challenges of the future.

Facilities
The KCP campus is 22 acres and includes a Reggio-style Preschool area, 50 plus air-conditioned classrooms, playgrounds, sports fields, a library with over 20,000 volumes, a 465-seat auditorium, a swimming pool, a gym, the Model United Nations, National Honor Society, 4 science labs, 2 cafeterias and 4 computer labs.

Curriculum
KCP uses a bilingual, bi-national, multicultural curriculum that draws on the best of the United States and Columbia. Graduates receive an American High School Diploma and the Colombian Bachillerato Diploma. The school offers Advanced Placement courses and gives the PSAT and the SAT.

Extracurricular Activities
The school has a full activities program for students in all grades including art, drama, music, sports, and community service.

Technology
In addition to the four computer labs, each classroom has a computer, an LCD projector and a mimio board.

Professional Development
The school has a professional development fund that teachers can access. PD activities take place at the school throughout the year.

Employment
The school has 23 expat teachers, mostly from the United States. KCP wants dedicated, qualified and experienced teachers who will enjoy working in an open and collegial environment. Teachers at KCP need to have a BA, teaching certification and at least two years teaching experience. The school has a recruitment video online. Faculty have until January to declare their intentions for the next school year, so the school lists new openings after that.The school attends the major recruitment fairs like ISS and Northern Iowa. Interested teachers can send a letter of interest and a resume to the Director at mail@kcparrish.edu.co. The school will notify teachers who fit the school’s needs and arrange for interviews either at the school, a recruiting fair or via Skype.

While salaries are not given, the website says that many teachers can save over $10,000 per year. Salaries are subject to Colombian taxes. Benefits include annual airfare, health insurance, visas, furnished housing, excess baggage allowance, a cost-of-living allowance during the second year of the contract, free club membership, PD funds and tuition for dependents.

About Barranquilla
Barranquilla is only three hours from Miami. It has a population of around 2 million and is located on the Caribbean coast of Colombia. Western goods are readily available at the many shopping centers that are found around the city. Among the activities that teachers enjoy are dancing, hiking, swimming, tennis, golf, going to movies and the theater. Barranquilla has an active nightlife with many bars and nightclubs. And, it has Carnaval de Barranquilla four days before Ash Wednesday.

Graded – The American School of São Paulo (Escola Graduada de Sao Paulo)

Graded – The American School of São Paulo is a private, co-educational, non-sectarian day school for students from 3 through 18. The school was founded in 1920. While the school’s actual name appears to be The American School of Sao Paulo in English and Escola Graduada de Sao Paulo in Portuguese, it is commonly called Graded (and I have no idea why). Graded is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Brazilian Ministry of Education. This is an IB World School with authorization to use the IB Diploma programme.

Graded has over 1,200 students that represent 35 nationalities: 42% are Brazilian, 31% are North American, 10% are Latin American, 10% are Asian, and 6% are European. The school has 123 teachers.

Mission
The school mission is to give students an excellent American-style education that enables them to reach their potentials and become responsible global citizens.

Facilities
Graded has a 16-acre campus in the suburb of Morumbi. Facilities include 90 classrooms, playgrounds, 2 gyms, the Lemann-Tully Arts Center, 2 library/media centers, a running track, a soccer pitch, an auditorium, and infirmary, 9 computer labs, science labs and 2 theaters.

Curriculum
Graded uses and American curriculum for students from First Grade through Twelfth Grade. Preprimary use the Montessori curriculum. The school has three divisions: Lower School, Middle School and High School. The Lower School includes the Montessori Preprimary as well as the Elementary School. The Middle School and High School programs are college preparatory; graduates can receive an American High School diploma, the IB Diploma and a Brazilian High School diploma. Graded offers Advanced Placement courses for High School students. ESL support is available to all students that require it.

Extracurricular Activities
Graded offers a wide range of activities including the Model United Nations, choir, cancer shelter, book club, jazz band, photo club, Habitat for Humanity, day care, basketball, soccer, cheerleading and more.

Technology
Graded has 9 computer labs as well as 7 mobile labs. Most classrooms have projectors and interactive whiteboards. Most of the campus has wireless internet access. Technology is integrated throughout the curriculum.

Professional Development
The school provides teachers with funding for professional development activities.

Employment
Job openings are listed online. Teachers who are interested in working at Graded should send a resume to hr@graded.br with the desired position as the subject. Salaries are paid in Reais and are subject to Brazilian taxes. A salary schedule is not given on the school website. Benefits include an 8% severance allowance given annually, a 4% matching contribution to a pension fund, furnished housing, medical and dental insurance, air transportation to and from Sao Paulo, annual home leave airfare after two years, moving allowance of $500 coming to Brazil and $1,000 going home, settling-in allowance, professional development funding of $1,000 annually, grocery allowance of $60 monthly, free school lunch during work days, loan for automobile purchase, tuition for dependents, sick leave, bereavement leave, and personal days.

About São Paulo
São Paulo is the largest city in Brazil and the second largest city in Latin America. It has a population of city population of over 11 million and a metropolitan population of close to 20 million. It is the 10th richest city in the world and the main financial center of Brazil. São Paulo is home to many multinational corporations. The cost of expat living is expensive so the school should be paying a decent salary. As would be expected in a city of this size, there’s plenty to do and see from museums and theaters to pubs and clubs.

São Paulo is located in the south of the country and is about 70 kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean. It is an easy drive to the beach town of Guaruja. São Paulo has a mixed climate that is generally mild but with a lot of rain. The city is ethnically diverse, and the main language is Portuguese.

Pan American School of Porto Alegre

The Pan American School of Porto Alegre is an independent, non-profit, co-educational day school for students from Preschool through Grade 12. PAS is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. It is an IB World School with authorization to use the PYP. PAS was founded in 1966. The school has about 340 students; about 70% are Brazilian citizens. PAS has a 6:1 student/teacher ratio.

Mission
The school mission is to give students, within a multicultural environment, the opportunity to become successful world citizens.

Facilities
The school moved to a purpose-built campus in 2007. Facilities include new classrooms, playgrounds, a state-of-the-art gym, 2 computer labs, sports facilities, science labs, a library and a cafeteria.

Curriculum
PAS uses a fusion American and Brazilian curriculum with a student-centered approach to learning. The PYP was adopted in 2007. Elementary students have the traditional homeroom teacher for core subjects and specialists for other classes. The school uses an interdisciplinary team-based approach in the Middle School and High School. English as a Foreign Language and Portuguese as a Foreign Language are offered to all students. Advanced Placement classes are offered to High School students. Graduates receive Brazilian and US High School diplomas.

Extracurricular Activities
PAS has a full program of activities that include sports, arts and languages. A few examples of the activities offered are futsal, swimming, band, guitar, dance, yoga, soccer, Brazilian Model United Nations and science club.

Technology
Information technology is taught as part of the regular curriculum. PAS has two computer labs, three portable media carts and a computer in every classroom. The campus has a wireless internet connection.

Professional Development
No information is available on the school PD program.

Employment
The teaching staff comes from Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, England and the United States. PAS attends major international recruiting fairs, including the fair sponsored by The Association of American Schools in South America, the ISS fair, Search Associates fair, the University of Northern Iowa fair and the Queens University fair in Canada. The school also accepts applications directly to the school. Interested teachers should send a resume and notification of what hiring fairs they will be attending. Teachers who do not plan on attending any of the fairs, need to arrange for an interview with the school. Job openings are listed online, as is an application form.

Candidates should have a BA/BS in education, a teaching certificate and two years of teaching experience. Initial contracts are for two years. Salaries are not mentioned on the school website. Benefits include transportation at the beginning and end of the contract, reduced tuition for dependent children, shipping allowance, contract renewal bonus, annual airfare home, furnished housing, Brazilian medical insurance, a free lunch (yes, there is a free lunch), international cable in teacher housing and access to an activity program for teachers (hmm, what’s that?). The school says that teachers can save 10-20% of their salaries, but that some of that is normally used by teachers for travel during vacation periods. The school only hires couples who are both teachers, as one salary is not sufficient to support a family in Porto Alegre.

About Porto Alegre
Porto Alegre is the capital of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil. It was founded over 200 years ago and has a population of 1.3 million with many residents tracing their heritage back to a European migration in the 19th century. Porto Alegre has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and cool winters.

Among the points of interest are the Fundacao Ibere Camargo (a contemporary art museum), MARGS (a museum of local art) and the Museu de Ciencias e Tecnologia da PUC. The city has a number of shopping malls, restaurants, bars and pubs.

Escola Americana de Campinas is an independent, co-educational day school that provides educational services for students from Preschool through Grade 12. The school was founded in 1956. EAC is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Regional Government Office of Education in Brazil. There are over 500 students that represent more than 30 countries studying at EAC. The student-teacher ratio is 7.5 to 1.

Facilities
The EAC campus is 44,000 square meters of beautifully landscaped gardens and grassy areas. Facilities include a cafeteria, a library with over 19,000 items, computer labs, science labs, a gym, modern classrooms and sport fields.

Curriculum
EAC uses an English language curriculum with U.S. and Brazilian standards. Graduates of EAC receive an American and a Brazilian diploma. High School students can take Advanced Placement courses. EAC offers English as a Second Language and Portuguese as a Second Language. Standardized tests include the PSAT and SAT. Upper School students have character education once each term.

Extracurricular Activities
EAC offers a variety of activities that include Math Counts, Model United Nations, homework club, soccer, basketball, volleyball, guitar, robotics, dance, community service and cheerleading, among many other activities.

EAC is a wireless campus. Computer classes are part of the regular curriculum.

The school offers teachers PD opportunities such as bringing in outside experts for in-services, providing support for teachers to attend conferences and take courses and holding teacher-led workshops.
