Chiang Mai International School

I don’t have many entries for schools that are Christian-based. There are, I imagine, quite a few around the world; I just haven’t come across many of them in my research on international schools. So, here’s one in Thailand.

Chiang Mai International School is a Christian-based co-educational day school for students from Kindergarten through Grade 12. CMIS is affiliated with the Church of Christ in Thailand and is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The school was founded in 1958 as a school for the children of missionaries; while it still gives those children first priority, it accepts students from other cultures and religions. CMIS students represent over 30 nationalities.

Mission
The school mission is to provide an excellent international education within the context of Christian values and a Christian worldview.

Facilities
CMIS is located close to downtown Chiang Mai. The campus has air-conditioned classrooms, a Kindergarten/Elementary School building and a Middle School/High School building, a library, computer labs, science labs, an auditorium, a gym, a cafeteria, basketball courts and a sports field.

Curriculum
CMIS uses an American standards-based curriculum that is delivered within the context of a Christian worldview. Kindergarten is a full-day program. Elementary School runs from Grade 1 through Grade 6; Middle School is Grade 7 and Grade 8. Core classes are English, Math, Science and Social Studies. Grade 3 and Grade 5 take the International Schools Assessment annually; the PSAT and the SAT are offered to High School students. CMIS offers Advanced Placement classes for High School students.

Extracurricular Activities
CMIS has an after school program that includes sports: school teams compete in the Chiang Mai Athletic Conference. Among the sports available are badminton, basketball, futsal, soccer, swimming, tennis, track and field and volleyball.

Technology
Computer classes are taught as part of the regular curriculum.

Professional Development
CMIS provides professional development opportunities.

Employment
The school looks for teachers who are credentialed, have a degree in education or a relevant subject from a western college, have international experience and have experience working with after school activities.

CMIS expects teachers to be professional in behavior and appearance, have strong Christian values, respect all cultures and beliefs, are collaborative workers, are willing to commit to a two-year contract, can develop good relationships with students and are willing to sponsor after school activities.

Teachers who want to work at CMIS should send an e-mail to the school that includes a letter of interest; a completed online application form; copies of a passport, certification and university transcripts; and a CV. The school prefers in-person interviews, but does telephone and Skype interviews when necessary. Teaching candidates also needs to provide letters of reference, a criminal background check and verification of all documents. Job openings are listed on the school website.

Salaries are around $1,600 per month. Benefits include free tuition for dependents and more although the CMIS website doesn’t list them but does say they are modest.

British International School Phuket

The British International School, Phuket looks like a great school, and the basic format of the school website is attractive and easy to navigate, but the lack of information in some areas is definitely off-putting for teacher candidates. For example, there is no information on the school’s hiring policies or teacher benefits. Nor is there any information in the Living in Phuket section. The web page invites readers to use the handbook to get an idea of living in Phuket, but there is no handbook available. Schools need to realize that a school website is the first glimpse that prospective parents and teachers have of a school, and in that sense, BIS Phuket falls short of meeting the mark of presenting themselves in the best way possible.

The British International School Phuket is a private, co-educational boarding and day school for students from Pre-School through High School. The school was founded in 1996 and was first called Dulwich International College. BIS, Phuket is accredited by the Council of International Schools, the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, and the Thai Ministry of Education. BIS, Phuket is an IB World School with authorization to use the IB Diploma and the MYP. BIS has over 900 students that represent 36 nationalities; about 48% of the student population are Thai.

Mission
The school mission is to provide a quality education for national and international students from the ages of 3 to 18.

Facilities
The beautiful 32-acre campus on the island of Phuket has impressive facilities that include the Main Teaching Building and the Primary Building, a 50-meter pool, 8 playing fields, 8 boarding houses, 6 tennis courts, an air-conditioned gym, a sports hall, science labs, IT labs, 2 libraries and an infirmary.

Curriculum
The school uses the English National Curriculum, the Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education and the IB Diploma Programme. Students as young as 18 months are admitted to the school in the Little Ducks Pre-Nursery School. Young students follow the Early Years Foundation Stage. BIS, Phuket uses the MYP for students in Years 7, 8 and 9. B.I.S., Phuket is a Test Centre for the SAT

Extracurricular Activities
The school has an extensive afterschool program with over 70 activities weekly. Primary activities include music, drama, arts and crafts, cooking and sports. Secondary activities include chess, design technology, jazz band yearbook, rugby, basketball and much more. School teams compete in local and international sporting competitions.

Technology
BIS Phuket has a comprehensive plan to move their ICT program forward. Students are expected to be able to use IT across the curriculum and apply their ICT skills to solving real life problems. The school has computer labs, interactive whiteboards in all Primary School classrooms, and they are implementing a laptop program for students in Years 12 and 13.

Professional Development
The school has an extensive PD program so that teachers can keep current with the most recent developments in their teaching areas.

Employment
Job openings are listed online. The school offers no information on salaries, benefits or expected qualifications for new teachers.

About Phuket
Phuket is a popular tourist destination in Thailand. This island is about the size of Singapore and is the largest island in Thailand. Mountains cover about 70% of the island. Phuket has a tropical monsoon climate. The rainy season runs from May to October. Because it is a major tourist spot, Phuket has just about everything that a Westerner might want including a wide variety of restaurants, bars, pubs, and outdoor activities. I would certainly not mind working here.

Ruamrudee International School

Ruamrudee International School is an independent, co-educational, religious-based day school that provides educational services for students from Pre-School through Grade 12. RIS was founded in 1957 by the Catholic Redemptorists, but the school is open for all students regardless of faith. The school is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, the Thai Ministry of Education and the Council of International Schools. RIS is an IB World School.

The school has approximately 1,400 students from around the world.

Mission
The RIS mission is to provide students with an education that incorporates a strong academic base along with a focus on character education so that they will be prepared for the challenges of the global society.

Facilities
RIS has a 26 acres campus in a suburban area about 25 miles from downtown Bangkok. Facilities include a swimming pool, a cafeteria, sports fields, a gym, a performing arts center, science labs, computer labs, and air-conditioned classrooms.

Curriculum
The school uses a values-centered, American-style college preparatory curriculum modified for use in an international setting. Elementary School features an inquiry-based approach to learning. The Middle School is organized in much the same way as an American Middle School would be. The High School offers Advance Placement classes as well as the IB Diploma.

Extracurricular Activities
RIS offers a wide variety of activities for students of all grade levels. Activities include dance, Chinese, Incredible Science, soccer, computer programming, rock band, guitar, drama, Hindi and more. School teams compete in a local league. Competitive teams are open to elementary, middle and high school students.

Technology
Technology is integrated across the curriculum at RIS. The school has over 800 computers, both PC and Apple. The High School has a 1:1 laptop program. The campus has wireless internet.

Professional Development
RIS has an impressive PD program. They have a handbook online that explains their program; basically teachers get a 30,000 baht allowance per year to spend on PD. Activities include workshops, online courses, conferences, seminars, on-site courses, and post-graduate research courses. The PD program here is enough to make me want to work at RIS.

Employment
The profile of a RIS teacher is one who is collegial-minded, uses a variety of teaching strategies, is technologically literate, is committed to the moral purpose of the school, is an expert in their content area and is committed to professional development. Qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree, teaching certification, and more than two years experience in a K-12 school. The school attends the major recruiting fairs.

Salaries are said to be competitive. Benefits include professional growth allowance, medical insurance, settling-in allowance, round-trip airfare, home leave, and a signing bonus. Lanna International School Thailand

Lanna International School Thailand is a private, non-sectarian, co-educational school that provides educational services for students from Nursery to Year 13. The school is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. LIST has 260 students that represent 24 nationalities.

Mission
The school’s mission is to prepare students to be responsible global citizens and lifelong learners.

Facilities
LIST is located in Chiang Mai. The school facilities include a large pool, basketball courts, air-conditioned classrooms, computer labs, Fine Arts rooms, playgrounds, a football pitch, a cafeteria and science labs.

Curriculum
LAST uses a college preparatory British-based curriculum. All classes have “Expected Schoolwide Learning Results” that are the learning objectives students are expected to reach. Students in the primary and middle grades take annual standardized tests from the Cambridge International Examinations. High School students take the IGCSE and then the Cambridge Advance Level (A Level). They can also take the SAT. Curriculum documents are available for downloading.

Extracurricular Activities
LIST offers a wide range of extracurricular activities that include sports, art, drama, yearbook, crafts, clubs, music. Model United Nations and more. All teachers are expected to sponsor after school activities. LIST is a member of the Chiang Mai Athletics Conference.

Technology
The school has several computer labs that have internet access. Computer classes are part of the regular curriculum.

Professional Development
LIST supports professional development and expects teachers to continue their development while they are employed at the school. Teachers are given a 10,000 Baht bonus in the 3rd year and every other year for PD activities. Examples of PD activities are in-house programs, online courses, conferences, re-certification activities and professional journal subscriptions.

Employment
LIST wants experienced, qualified teachers with international teaching experience. Teachers need to be degreed and certified. Openings are listed online. A teacher handbook is available online. Salaries are not listed, benefits include a return trip to the home country at the end of the initial two-year contract and then annually thereafter, a housing allowance, ten days of sick leave, maternity leave, a professional development allowance and medical insurance. St. John’s International School Bangkok

St. John’s International School is another of the many international schools in Bangkok. It was opened in 1992. St. John’s is an independent, co-educational day school that provides educational services for students from Early Childhood through Year 13. The Council for British Teachers accredits St. John’s.

Mission
St. John’s mission is to provide a British-style, holistic education to help students become lifelong learners and global citizens.

Facilities
St. John’s has a large campus located in Bangkok, The school has a 25-meter swimming pool, a large sports hall, an all weather track, a grass playing field, a canteen, 2 libraries, a computer suite, science labs and air-conditioned classrooms.

Curriculum
St. John’s uses a mixed curriculum that includes the Early Years Foundation Stage, the English National Curriculum and UK independent and international curricula. The school has an ESL/EAL program, as well as a program for students with special needs. Students take the IGCSE, the AS and the A level examinations at age 16 and 18. The curriculum is designed to prepare students for future education in universities and schools around the world. St. John’s also offers the North American-style International Diploma Program.

Extracurricular Activities
St. John’s offers students a wide range of extracurricular activities including basketball, soccer, chess, swimming, drama, music, and an assortment of clubs.

Technology
The school offers ICT classes from Primary through Secondary. These skills are integrated throughout the curriculum. St. John’s has a computer suite and interactive whiteboards in many classrooms.

Professional Development
No information is available on the school website.

Employment
St. John’s has over 30 expatriate teachers. The school is looking for motivated, dedicated and enthusiastic teachers who are flexible and creative in the classroom. Teachers should be familiar with the British-style educational model.
