Pechersk School International is an independent, co-educational day school that provides educational services for students from the ages of 3 to 19. PSI is an IB World School with authorization to use all three IB programmes. It is accredited by the Council of International Schools and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. The school was founded in 1995.
PSI has around 430 students that represent 40 nationalities. About 24% of the student population are Ukrainians with the second largest group being Americans at 14%. Class sizes run from 14 to 20.
MissionThe school mission is to provide students with an integrated set of programs based on the IB learner profile so that they will become responsible global citizens and lifelong learners. The school motto is “a place where we belong.”
Facilities
PSI moved to a purpose-built campus in a suburb of Kyiv in 2003. Facilities include 40 classrooms, a library, a gym, science labs, 2 computer labs, an onsite doctor, a cafeteria, an all-weather sports field and primary playgrounds.
Curriculum
PSI is an IB World School. They use all three IB programmes. These feature an interdisciplinary, inquiry-based approach to education. For more information on the IB see their website. Graduates can receive the IB Diploma, as well as a High School Diploma. The school has an EAL program for new students that need assistance with English.
Extracurricular Activities
A variety of afterschool activities are offered including community service, foreign languages, sports like basketball and football, Model United Nations, pottery, drama, music, Amnesty International, yearbook and homework help.
Technology
The school has two computer labs and the campus has a wireless network. There are over 200 computers in PSI. In addition to the regular labs, PSI has two wireless laptop trolleys and smartboards in the classrooms. Technology is integrated throughout the curriculum.
Professional Development
PSI is committed to providing teachers with professional development opportunities, such as workshops and onsite training.
Employment
PSI wants dynamic teachers who enjoy working with colleagues and are committed to the IB approach to education. The school has 60 teachers with about 25% from the United States. About Kyiv
Kyiv is the capital of the Ukraine. It has a number of interesting sites for teachers to visit including the St. Sophia cathedral and the Pechersk Lavra cave monastery. The city centre is full of shops, restaurants, museums and parks. For the teachers who enjoy discovering the nightlife of a new city, Kyiv has bars, pubs, cafes, music clubs and classical music. The city has Western supermarkets and, of course, the traditional markets with local produce. Kyiv is considered to be a safe city for expat living due to a strong police presence – a holdover from the Soviet Union days.
