Tashkent International School is a non-profit, co-educational day school that provides educational services for students from PreK through Grade 12. TIS was founded in 1994. It is accredited by CIS (Council of International Schools) and New England Association of Schools and Colleges. TIS is an IB World School.

Approximately 393 students representing 43 nationalities study at TIS. The average class size is 15. There are 43 full-time faculty members, as well as 13 part-time members teaching at TIS. Teachers come from the US, Canada, Ireland, the UK, Luxembourg, Holland, France, and other countries. 16 of the full-time faculty are from the US. 45% of the faculty have advanced degrees.

Mission
Tashkent International School, using an American based curriculum, will educate students to become ethical, responsible, productive citizens of the world with the skills to think creatively, reason critically, and to communicate effectively.

Facilities
TIS has a new facility on a 13-acre campus with 3 computer labs, 2 sports halls, a playground for preschool and kindergarten students, a media center, 2 indoor gyms, an auditorium, 3 science labs, air-conditioned classrooms,and full physical education facilities. The Tashkent International Medical Clinic is located on school grounds.

Curriculum
The school offers a college prep curriculum and instruction is in English. As an IB World School, TIS uses the PYP, MYP and IB Diploma programs. TIS offers AP courses for high school students. The school has an ESL program for students from grades 2-9. Russian, French and Korean are offered as foreign languages.

Extra-curricular Activities
TIS hosts many extra-curricular activities including basketball, soccer, volleyball, karate, the Model UN, Student Council, Yearbook, art, music and community service.

Technology
TIS emphasizes the role of technology in the school and works on an integrated approach into learning outcomes and subject areas. The IT coordinator works with classroom teachers on integration projects. All classrooms have networked computers. The school has three computer labs.

About Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan is one of the Central Asia countries. It is located between Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Kyrgyzstan. It is predominately steppe and desert, but does have rich farmland in the eastern part of the country. The northern part of the country lies on the Aral Sea. Cotton is the major export, but Uzbekistan also exports gold, oil, and natural gas. 60% of the population lives in rural areas. Temperatures fluctuate greatly in the country; the north is coldest and the south warmest. In the north temperatures can fall to -35 degrees Celsius and reach 45 degrees Celsius in the south during the summer months.

Tashkent is the capital and the major industrial and transportation center of Uzbekistan. It has a population of around 2.5 million and has a subway. Tashkent was founded around the 1^st century B.C. and has been invaded by the Arabs, Genghis Khan, Tamerlane and Russia. The city’s name means Stone Fortress.
