The John F. Kennedy School is a public, bilingual, bicultural, tuition-free, co-educational school located in Berlin. The school was founded in 1960. It provides educational services for students from Kindergarten through Grade 13. The Secondary School at JFKS is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. This is a school that only accepts American or German teachers.
The school has over 1,700 American, German and international students. Approximately 57% of the students are German and 33% American.
Mission
The school mission is to provide students with a bilingual, bicultural educational experience that encourages them to develop the independence, spirit of inquiry and critical thinking skills necessary to become responsible global citizens.
Facilities
The 40,000 square meter campus is located in a suburb of Berlin. Facilities include 135 classrooms, 9 science labs, 2 library-media centers, 4 computer labs, 2 gyms, a sports field, a track, a fine arts and drama complex and a cafeteria.
Curriculum
JFKS uses both English and German as the languages of instruction. The curriculum reflects this bilingualism as it draws on both German and American curricula. Critical thinking, independent inquiry and open-mindedness are stress at JFKS. The school is organized into an Elementary School for Kindergarten through Grade 6 and a Secondary School for Grade 7 to Grade 13. Students may graduate with a U.S. High School Diploma or the German Abitur. Advanced Placement courses are available.
Extracurricular Activities
JFKS offers a full-range of after school activities for students from Grade 2 to Grade 13. These include art, band, choir, basketball, soccer, badminton, meditation, Chess Club, orchestra, accelerated math, lacrosse, track and field, Model United Nations, National Honor Society, yearbook and more.
Technology
The school believes in integrating technology into the daily curriculum. In addition to the 3 computer labs with both Macs and Windows computers, JFKS has the usual peripheral hardware. The library has wireless internet access.
Professional Development
JFKS encourages teachers to be actively involved in professional development activities.
Employment
Qualifications for prospective teachers include: American citizenship, three years teaching experience in a U.S. public school and in the subject for which the teacher is applying, teaching certification, a Bachelor’s degree for elementary teachers and a Master’s degree for secondary teachers, a willingness to learn German, and a willingness to accept a two-year initial contract. Candidates who fit with the school’s needs will be offered interviews at one of the recruitment fairs, although it is not necessary to register with the fair in order to be interviewed.
