International British School of Bucharest

The International British School of Bucharest is an independent, co-educational day school for students from the ages of 4 to 19. The school was founded in 2000. IBSB is accredited by the Council of British International Schools, the Romanian Ministry of Education and is in the final stages of accreditation with the European Council of International Schools. IBSB has a student population of 270; the school accepts international and Romanian students. The maximum class size is 20 students.

Vision
The school vision is to provide a safe, stimulating and balanced education that lives up to the school motto of “Education without Frontiers.”

Facilities
School facilities include modern classrooms, science labs, 2 ICT labs, an art room, a music room, a Primary School Play Area, an Early Years Play Area, a sport pitch, and a library.

Curriculum
IBSB uses the English National Curriculum as the foundation for the school curriculum and have adapted it for use in an international setting. The school focuses on Math, English, Science and Information Technology. Specialist teachers are used for subjects like music and PE. Secondary students take the Cambridge IGCSE and A Level exams.

Extracurricular Activities
The school offers a range of activities that include music, dance, swimming, arts, language, community service, chess, Kangaroo math, debating and much more.

Technology
IBSB has 2 ICT labs. ICT is one of the core subjects in the curriculum.

Professional Development
IBSB is committed to providing professional development activities for the staff so that they can provide the best education possible for its students. PD activities include inservice training, workshops and conferences around the UK and Europe, peer mentoring and external coaching.

Employment
Teacher candidates should be diligent, responsible, flexible, self-starting, team players with a good sense of humor. The school doesn’t list salaries or benefits, but does say that salaries are “realistic” and teachers receive professional support, excellent working conditions in a purpose-built school that has a strong community spirit. About Bucharest
Bucharest is the capital of Romania and the largest city as well. It is located in the southeast of the country along the banks of the Dabmovita River. The city contains a number of large parks and gardens. Bucharest has a population of approximately 2 million. 96% of the population follows the Romanian Orthodox religion. However, church attendance is actually quite low.

The city has a continental climate with cold winters and hot summers. The average temperature in the summers is 23 degrees Celsius although it can reach the low 40s.

Bucharest is a rapidly developing city and its economy is focused on industry and services. You can find the supermarket chains like Carrefour and Metro to shop in. New supermarkets and malls are being built yearly.The city has an extensive public transportation system including a Metro.

Cultural events play an important role in life in Bucharest; there are visual and performing arts as well as nightclubs, museums and a symphony. Bucharest was once called Little Paris.

International School of Trieste

The International School of Trieste was founded in 1964. It is a non-profit day school for students from the ages of 2 to 19. IST is accredited by the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges. IST has a new website that offers even less information than the old version did.

IST has over 300 students that represent 25 nationalities. Many of the students come from the local community, and many of the international students come from families associated with local scientific institutions. Class sizes run from an average of 20 in Early Childhood to 24 in Elementary School to 20 in the Middle School and 10 in the High School.

Mission
The mission of the school is to provide a world-class international education that helps students develop their potentials and become lifelong learners and responsible citizens.

Facilities
The school has a two-story building that also includes a sports facility. Other facilities include: a library, a science lab, state of the art computer lab, a cafeteria, and a gym, along with outdoors play areas.

Curriculum
IST offers students an international curriculum. The school is organized with four academic sections: Early Childhood, Elementary School, Middle School and High School. All sections with the exception of Early Childhood study Italian as a vital component of the program. The school curriculum has Core Subjects and Additional Subjects, similar to many international schools.

Extra-curricular Activities
IST has a range of extra-curricular activities including sports like tennis, baseball and soccer, music, drama, a variety of clubs, chess, yoga, Italian, and community development.

Technology
IST upgraded their technology infrastructure in November 2010. They have a fast and reliable internet connection. The campus has a wireless network. IST has computer classes for all age students although the computer is used more as a “problem-solving machine” in the upper grades.

Professional Development
No information is available on the school website.

Employment
The school updated their website recently, and it offers even less information about employment than the old website. The school seeks teachers who are are flexible and share the school’s educational philosophy. The hiring season for the school is between January and March, but they accept applications throughout the year. No information is available on salaries or benefits. About Trieste
Trieste is a beautiful city located in northeastern Italy on the Adriatic Sea. It has a population of just over 200,000 and was once part of Austria. This is one of those cities known as border towns because it sits along the Slovenian border. The mixed population is made up of Italians, Slovenians, Serbs, Croatians, Germans and Hungarians. Trieste is a port city and much of its economy depends on its strategic geographical location. Trieste has a pleasant climate with cold but dry winters, rainy springs and autumns, and hot dry summers.

Some of the highlights of the city are: the Miramare Castle built in the mid ninteenth century, the Castle of San Giusto, the Arch of Riccardo that dates back to the Roman period, the Basilica Forense, the Roman theatre and more. James Joyce did much of his writing here. The city actually has a long list of famous writers who took up residence there while writing.

American School of Warsaw

The American School of Warsaw was established in 1953 during the early years of the cold war. The school is a private, non-profit institution that provides educational services for students from Preschool through Grade 12. ASW is accredited by the European Council of International Schools and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges; it is an IB World School with permission to offer the IB Diploma Programme.

ASW has over 900 students that represent 51 countries. There are 117 teachers and specialists and the school has a low student-teacher ratio with an average class size of 20.

Mission
The mission of ASW is to provide students a challenging and supportive academic environment where students can develop their potential and achieve excellence intellectually, socially, emotionally and physically.

Facilities
The school moved to new facilities in 2001. They include a 350-seat auditorium, 4 computer labs, 7 science labs, library, an arts complex, two gyms, an indoor swimming pool, specialist rooms, a cafeteria, sound and recording studios, an all-weather sports field, tennis courts and an early childhood area.

Extra-curricular Activities
ASW has a full range of after school activities for students at all grade levels. These include choir, chess, swimming, scouts, Habitat for Humanity, Model United Nations, arts and crafts, and many more. Sports teams compete with other international schools in the region including Bucharest, Budapest, Istanbul, Moscow, Munich, Prague, Sofia, Zurich and Vienna.

Curriculum
ASW uses an American-based curriculum modified for an international school. This is a common approach to American schools that are located overseas. The curriculum is aligned and uses the traditional American core curriculum with specialist classes in the arts, library, health, PE and technology. ESL support is provided. High school students graduate with an ASW High School Diploma. Additionally, the IB Diploma program is offered to students in Grade 11 and Grade 12.

Technology
ASW believes in technology integration throughout the curriculum and has technology specialists in the elementary, middle and high school sections. Among the available technology to support teachers and students are a one-to-one laptop program for students in grades 5-12, high speed internet access throughout the campus and active boards in over 40 classrooms.

Professional Development
The school is committed to professional development and actively support teachers so that they can keep current with the latest developments in education. Teachers receive $1500 per year for professional development. Among the PD programs are attendance at regional conferences, technology training, in-house PD activities and Wednesday early release. ASW has an excellent section of the website dedicated to employment. Openings are listed online. The school attends the main recruiting fairs as the primary means of teacher recruitment, but the website notes that the school is also open to using creative ways for interviewing teacher candidates. ASW is looking for teachers who are committed to academic excellence, value professional development, enjoy working collaboratively and understand the intricacies of working and living overseas. An ideal Candidate Profile is available online, and all candidates should read this page before applying for a teaching position. Teachers who are interested in applying for a position must follow the school’s application procedures exactly. These include sending: a resume that is not more than two pages long, a letter of application that is not more than two pages long and a copy of a minimum of two references with contact information included. These should be scanned into one PDF attachment and sent to Director@aswarsaw.org. No information is available on salaries and benefits.

About Poland
Poland is located in central Europe. It is the ninth largest country in Europe and is about the size of the state of Ohio in the United States. Being located in the center of Europe, Poland has had more than its share of difficulties throughout its history. It has been conquered by Russia, Prussia, and Austria, and at one time, from 1795 through 1918, it ceased to exist as a country. Poland is known for its food and friendly people. It offers beautiful countryside, sandy beaches on the Baltic Sea, lovely mountains and a temperate climate. There are many historical monuments and buildings for the expat to visit. Travel is easy to and from the rest of Europe which makes Poland an exciting home for an international teacher.

Bavarian International School

Bavarian International School was opened in 1990 to serve the international community in the north of Munich. The school is a non-profit, co-educational day school providing educational services for students from Pre-Reception (age 4) through Grade 12. BIS is an IB World School with authorization to use all three IB programs. It is accredited by the Council of International Schools and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

BIS has over 750 students that represent over 43 nationalities. The main nationalities are: American, British, German, Italian, and Spanish. Class sizes are limited to 24 students.

Mission
The BIS mission is to inspire and challenge students to reach their personal and intellectual potentials.

Facilities
The school is housed in a renovated mansion along with purpose-built facilities for the lower school. Among the facilities are science and computer labs, libraries, and ICT room, music rooms, a 510-seat performing arts center and a sports hall. It is located in Haimhausen.

Curriculum
The school has three sections: the Lower School for Pre-Reception through Grade 5, the Middle School for Grades 6 through Grades8, and the Upper School for students from Grades 9 -12. In addition to the IB Diploma for senior students, BIS offers the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) Examination program to Grade 9 and 10 students.

Extra Curricular Activities
BIS has a full extra-curricular program for students from Grade 1 though Grade 12. Among the offerings are: rock band, cheerleading, jazz dance, judo, drama, clubs, Brownies, dance, visual arts, yearbook, ballet, basketball, Chinese, academics, chess, Model United Nations, soccer, rugby, badminton, tennis, cross country, swimming, skiing and golf.

Technology
Technology is taught as a separate subject. Teachers are expected to be able to use technology effective to enhance learning.


Professional Development
Teachers are expected to pursue professional development opportunities and to be involved in school in-service activities and to be actively engaged in the school appraisal process.

Employment
BIS lists open positions on the school website. Teacher candidates should have the following qualifications: university degree, a teaching certificate, a minimum of two years experience, international school experience, a strong student focus, be a team player, and have IB experience.

Teaching candidates should send a cover letter, resume, a statement of educational philosophy, full employment history and contact details for referees to Human Resources.

About Haimhausen
This municipality has only four thousand people and a few shops. It does have a skatepark which may be for the students from the school. Haimhausen is just north of Munich.

Munich is the capital of Bavaria and has a population of about 1.35 million. Munich is located on the northern edge of the Alps. The area has a continental climate which is modified by the closeness of the Alps. There is a lot of rain in the area and large differences in the temperature between night and day and summer and winter. Summers run from May through September with average temperatures around 23 degrees Celsius. January is the coldest month with average temperatures around -1 degree Celsius.

Munich has large populations of foreigners including Turks and Albanians. Close to 25% of the population are not German citizens. Munich is a European cultural center. The city has the Bavarian State Opera, the Residenz Theatre and the Prinzregententheater where you can go to see your favorite operas. The city has three orchestras as well. The city has an active night life with over 6,000 establishments licensed to serve alcohol. There are many discos and pubs around the city especially in the student quarter. If you like beer, sausages and pork, you’ll love Munich.
