Fukuoka International School

Fukuoka International School is a private, co-educational day school that was founded in 1972. It provides educational services to students from Pre-K to Grade 12. FIS is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and College and the Japanese Ministry of Education. The school has authorization to the use the IB Diploma Program.

Mission
The school’s mission is to develop a learning environment that supports high educational standards and treats students with respect.

Facilities
FIS facilities in the western part of Fukuoka City include 2 computer labs, a library with over 10,000 volumes, an art room, a science lab, a gym, a music room, a playground, an art center and 20 modern well-lite classrooms.FIS has an annex that is about four-minutes from the main campus and has the FIS Arts Center.

Curriculum
FIS uses the PYP in the elementary school. The Middle School uses an integrated curriculum that prepares students for the IB Diploma Program. High School students earn the FIS diploma and may pursue the IB Diploma.

Extracurricular Activities
A wide variety of after school activities are offered including volleyball, basketball, futsal, soccer, music, art and many others. Teachers sponsor after school activities.

Technology
The school has 2 computer labs that use Macs.

Professional Development
Teachers are expected to have professional growth goals. The school will support teachers with 100,000 yen that can be used for classes, workshops or conferences.

Employment
The school wants teachers that are certified, experienced professionals and are suitable matches for teaching in a cultural environment similar to that of Fukuoka International School. Benefits include a lunch allowance, round trip travel expenses, sick days, shipping allowance, furnishing allowance, tuition allowance for dependents, resettlement allowance, key money deposit allowance, maternity leave, health insurance, housing allowance, and a pension plan. FIS uses a salary schedule with 11 steps and 3 columns. The salary range is from 3,180,000 yen to 5,600,000 yen. Initial contracts are two years. About Fukuoka
Fukuoka is located on the island of Kyushu. The city has a population of around 2.5 million. It is known for its green spaces. The city has hot summers and mild winters with rare snowfall. Fukuoka is a popular tourist destination and has a number of museums and festivals.

The American School in Japan

The American School in Japan  was founded in 1902 and is one of the oldest international schools in the world. It provides educational services for students from Pre-K through Grade 12.  ASIJ is a private, co-educational, college preparatory day school. The curriculum is mostly from the United States. ASIJ is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

There are over 1,500 students from over 40 nationalities. Approximately two-thirds of the students are American citizens. Most students are in Japan with their parents who are on temporary assignment.

ASIJ has about 150 faculty members. The average tenure is nine years. ASIJ says that it has a small student-teacher ratio; the average in Elementary is 21, which I consider to be quite large.

Mission:
The mission of the American School of Japan is to develop lifelong learners who are compassionate and are prepared to be responsible global citizens.

Facilities
AISJ has two campuses: the Roppongi section of Tokyo is home to The Early Learning Center that is for students from ages 3-5; they have three playgrounds. The main campus is located in Chofu. There are three divisions here in separate buildings. The campus is on a 14-acre site. It includes: two athletic fields, an indoor swimming pool, three gyms, tennis courts, three libraries with over 45,000 titles, a 570 seat state of the art theater, choir and music practice rooms, computer labs, and science labs.

Curriculum
ASIJ is another school with a fusion American curriculum to meet the needs of its international students. The curriculum is geared towards the school’s purpose of serving as a college preparatory institution. There are AP courses in 17 subjects for high school students. Japanese language study is required for Elementary School students. It is an elective in the years after that.

Extra-curricular Activities
The activities offered by ASIJ provide a balance to the challenging academic curriculum. Activities include: art, gymnastics, indoor and outdoor games, ballet, music, art, chess, drama, technology club, Model United Nations, National Honor Society, web publishing, debate and many, many more. There are also 32 teams in 16 sports for students that want to be involved in competitive athletics.

Technology
ASIJ has a wireless network throughout most of the main campus. There are over 800 computers available for student, faculty and staff use. There are over 200 wireless enabled laptops, and the school is steadily replacing desktops with laptops. The school uses both traditional labs and mobile laptop labs. And in a sentence that brings joy to my heart, the website says, “The school vision is to enable flexible learning allowing learning opportunities to be conducted anytime and any place.” Starting at second grade students learn how to use the internet for research. The High School has a 1:1 laptop program.

Professional Development
ASIJ offers teachers a variety of professional development opportunities. PD takes place both on and off campus. ASIJ is particularly interested in teachers with experience in integrating technology.

Employment
Teacher qualifications are: a college degree, a minimum of 5 years of teaching experience and a willingness to sponsor co-curricular activities. Openings are listed online. Salaries and Benefits
ASIJ has a salary schedule that is not available online, but they do note that salaries start at US$80,000. Salaries are paid in Yen. Teachers are responsible for Japanese taxes. The salary schedule has 21 steps. Initial contracts are for three years.

Benefits include: housing allowance, relocation allowance, travel to and from Tokyo, sea shipment of 1,000 pounds per teacher and 250 pounds per dependent, medical insurance, dental insurance – cost shared between school and employee, sick leave of 10 days per year that can be accumulated to 60 days, personal and bereavement leave and a retirement plan.

About Tokyo
Tokyo is well known to just about everybody in the world. It is a modern city with great opportunities for the expat resident from learning about traditional Japanese culture to seeing the latest Western entertainment. The city is filled with restaurants, bars, nightclubs and museums.

The weather in Tokyo is hot and humid in the summer with mild fall and winter seasons.

Teachers live near campus about an hour train ride from Tokyo. Most teachers social life revolves around the school and the immediate area.

Nagoya International School

Nagoya International School was founded in 1964. NIS is a private, co-educational, college preparatory day school that provides educational services for students from Pre School through Grade 12. NIS is an IB World School and is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

There are approximately 333 students at NIS that represent over 26 nationalities – the two largest being the United States and Japan. The average class size is 20.

Mission
Nagoya International School’s mission is to engage students with a challenging curriculum so that they become critical thinkers, lifelong learners, and responsible global citizens.

Facilities
NIS is located on the outskirts of Nagoya and has 7.5 acres of land on which there are three school buildings that are connected by covered walkways, terraces and gardens. The three buildings are: the Early Learning Center, the Raymond Building, and the Wing Building. Buildings have central heating and air conditioning. The ELC building has been fitted with bathroom facilities appropriate for small children. Elementary and high school students use the Raymond Building which has a library, 2 science labs, a multi-purpose room, a technology lab, a health office and a cafeteria. Middle school students are housed in the Wing Building which has a gym, a fitness center, fine arts rooms, a computer lab and a science lab. Other facilities in the school include: two playgrounds, a multi-purpose playing field with artificial turf, a two-story field house, and a Japanese Cultural Center.

Curriculum
NIS uses an American standards-based curriculum that prepares students for university study. The school is structured like a tradition American school with core classes, specialists and exploratory classes. NIS offers ESOL classes to about 10% of the student population. Students that graduate from NIS earn a U.S. High school diploma and may earn an IB Diploma.

Extra Curricular Activities
Teachers are expected to lead after school activities. These include: arts and crafts, academic clubs, and athletics.

Technology
NIS is a wireless school, but also has three computer labs. Classrooms also have computers. Teachers are expected to use technology as a tool in their classrooms.

Professional Development
NIS is a member of EARCOS. The school provides opportunities for professional development and expect teachers to be committed to their own personal growth.

Employment
NIS is looking for teachers that are team players, flexible, technologically literate, student-centered and committed to professional development. Basic requirements for teachers are: a Bachelor’s Degree, a teaching certificate, and a minimum of two years experience.

Candidates need to send a statement of educational philosophy, a resume, two letters of reference, and a copy of a current teaching certificate to working@nis.ac.jp. Attachments may be added to the email. Initial contracts are for 2 years with follow-up contracts of one year. No information is given on salaries or benefits.

About Nagoya
Nagoya is located in central Japan between Osaka and Tokyo and has a population of around 2 million which makes it the fourth largest city in Japan. Because of the presence of the major Japanese automotive companies, Nagoya is an important economic center. This economic situation has made Nagoya attractive to foreigners, and Nagoya has a developing expat community.

Nagoya has a generally moderate climate although summers can be quite hot.

Some of the main attractions of Nagoya are: the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology, the Nagoya Castle and the Nittaiji Temple. Nagoya has an active nightlife with bars, clubs and restaurants that cater to both Japanese and foreigners.

Nagoya has the usual shopping facilities that one would expect to find in a developed country such as malls and large, Western-style supermarkets. The school website has an excellent section on living in Japan.
